Intensives, also known as Winterim (grades 9-12): Using CCS’s Four Pillars of Academic Success, Upper School students embark on a week-long program, generally scheduled in February or March, that allows students to apply what they learn through the CCS curriculum to real life experiences, found outside of the traditional classroom. To find the date for Winterim each year, please check the CCS school calendar on the website.

Advanced Placement courses are also offered through project-based learning: AP English Language and Composition, AP English Literature and Composition, AP Environmental Science, and AP Seminar.

Junior and Senior Year InternshipsAs part of our Entrepreneurship Pillar, our 11th and 12th graders engage in a year-long internship. Our Internship Program moves students out of the classroom and toward an environment that has a deeper focus on their passions, success skills, and professionalism within the work world. In addition to fulfilling all of the responsibilities assigned by their mentors, students write weekly reflections, complete research in the field of study, create an enhancement for the field or the workplace, and present their enhancement in a public exhibition. Any 11th or 12th grade NCS student who visits CCS will experience a one-day internship on Wednesdays during their stay.

Living Arrangements and Travel

Network students are housed with CCS friends or families. Students should plan for a one week or two week experience in order to have enough time to feel and see the beauty of “The Lowcountry.” The Johns Island area is known as one of the Sea Islands that includes Kiawah Island, Seabrook Island, and Wadmalaw Island. Nearby areas of note include historic downtown Charleston, Folly Beach, Isle of Palms, and Sullivan’s Island. Students may fly into CHS, Charleston’s International Airport. It is about 45 minutes from Johns Island.

What Makes CCS Learning Experience so Special?

Though many schools have a similar curriculum for what students learn, CCS sets itself apart by how students learn. At the core of the CCS curriculum, one will find the traditional areas of math, science, English, history, and language. However, what makes CCS special is its commitment to placing students at the center of the learning experience. The CCS’s Four Pillars of Academic Success - Project-Based Learning, Arts and Creativity, Leadership through Outdoor Education, and Financial Literacy and Entrepreneurship - are foundational components of a student’s daily experience.

Programs of Note

Outdoor Education: The curriculum for the Outdoor Education Education Pillar focuses on Leadership and Core Values, Outdoor Skills Development, and the Science of and the Sustainability of the Natural World.
